Kohli beats Tendulkar in becoming fastest to 10,000

Virat Kohli became the fastest man to reach 10,000 one-day international runs on Wednesday with another exhibition of batting for India against West Indies.

Kohli went into the second match of the series in Visakhapatnam needing 81 runs to become the 13th man – and the fifth Indian – to reach the milestone in the 50-over game.

And he was untroubled by the West Indies attack as achieved the feat in his 205th inning – 54 fewer than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar needed to reach the same total.

A routine single to long-on off the bowling of Ashley Nurse saw Kohli reach the landmark, the man most see as the world’s best batsman raising his arms to the sky as he took in the adulation of the adoring home crowd.

Tendulkar is well clear at the top of the list of highest ODI run scorers with 18,426. However, should he continue at his current pace, Kohli – still only 29 – will surely surpass that number before the end of his career.

Facebook Messenger gets a big makeover

Change is hard, so brace yourself, Facebook Messenger users: an app overhaul is on the way.

Introduced Tuesday, Messenger 4, which is rolling out now and slated to reach all uses over the coming weeks, is all about simplicity. To that end, Facebook has reduced the number of tabs inside the app from nine to just three: Chats, People, and Discover.

Chats will house all your one-on-one and group conversations, People is where you can check out friends’ stories and see who’s active, and Discover is for connecting with businesses and playing Instant Games.

Facebook Messenger Head Davis Marcus tipped this redesign in January, noting that the app had “become too cluttered.”

Don’t worry about losing your favorite Messenger features, though: Facebook said they’re all staying put.

“Whether you want to poll your friends on which movie to see, split the bill for last night’s dinner, share your live location to find friends at a music festival, challenge them to your favorite games, or catch up in a group video chat, we aren’t changing anything about what you’ve always loved about Messenger,” Messenger VP Stan Chudnovsky wrote in a blog post.

Meanwhile, one new feature in Messenger 4 lets you spice up your chat bubbles with custom color gradients, which you can see below.

“You can see the colors change from red to blue, for example, as you scroll up and down a conversation,” Chudnovsky explained.

In the future, Facebook plans to introduce a Dark Mode for those who prefer a black background, and a “re-skinned interface that cuts down on the glare from your phone.”

Here’s hoping people like the new version of Messenger better than Shapchat’s widely panned redesign earlier this year. Snapchat was forced to roll back elements of the overhaul after users revolted.

Indiabulls Ventures to raise $210m from Tamarind, Steadview, others

, the financial services arm of the Indiabulls Group, is raising Rs 1,539.20 crore (about $210 million) from four foreign institutional investors including, US private equity firm Tamarind Capital and investment firm Steadview Capital, according to an announcement.

The Indian company will use the proceeds to capitalise its two subsidiaries, Indiabulls Consumer Finance Ltd and Indiabulls Asset Reconstruction Co Ltd, for meeting their business requirements, to support the future growth of their businesses and to further augment the long-term financial resources of the company and such other purposes, it said in a BSE filing on Wednesday.

Of the total investment, Rs 740 crore will come from Tamarind Capital, Rs 614.2 crore from Steadview Capital Mauritius, Rs 125.8 crore from ABG Capital and the remaining Rs 59.2 crore from DF international Partners. The funds will be raised by the way of preferential allotment of compulsorily convertible debentures (CCDs) to these investors.

These CCDs will be compulsorily converted into fully paid-up equity shares of face value of Rs. 2 each, at a conversion price of Rs. 550 per share on or before 18 months from the date of issue. This is a 35 per cent premium to the company’s closing market price of Rs 408.20 on Tuesday on NSE. The debentures shall carry a coupon of 14.9 per cent per annum.

Tamarind is a part of Singapore-based investment firm Clermont Group, founded by New Zealand-born entrepreneur Richard F Chandler.

In July this year, another Clermont Group company, Cinnamon Capital, sold more than 1.73 crore shares or 2.86 per cent stake in Indiabulls Ventures for a little over Rs 832 crore through an open market transaction. The shares were purchased by Jasmine Capital Investments Pte Ltd. The PE firm’s stake had reportedly dropped to 3.46 per cent after the sale.

Recently, another Indiabulls Group company Indiabulls Housing Finance was also in the news for mulling stake sale in UK-based lender OakNorth Holdings. The deal could see Indiabulls selling its entire or part of its 18.7 per cent stake in the company to a private equity fund, reported The Economic Times.

nubia X with dual-display and Wi-Fi charging technology to launch on October 31st

“The nubia X will have a radical design with no camera, bezel/ notch on the front”

ZTE’s sub-brand, nubia will be launching its new flagship smartphone, the nubia X, on October 31st. However, before that, the company has gone ahead and shared a few interesting features of the upcoming handset on Weibo (China’s Twitter). It’s worth mentioning that the features were in Chinese and we had to seek help from Google Translate to decode what was written. Therefore, the details about some of the features remain somewhat vague.

To start with, the nubia X has been confirmed to come with dual displays: one on the front and the other at the back. The front screen is said to feature a “flexible OLED” panel (as per Google translate) that allows it to be curved from the edges. Moreover, the handset will flaunt an almost 100 percent screen-to-body ratio with no hindrance from notch/ bezel. Additionally, there will be no front-facing camera on the device – the back cameras combined with the secondary screen will be able to take selfies. The displays will also have an eye-protection mode.

While core specs of the handset were not shared, the company claimed it’ll come with “gaming-ready” hardware. Apart from this, the nubia X could come with a never-heard-before Wi-Fi charging technology. As the name suggests, the technology will wirelessly charge the device using Wi-Fi signals. How that’ll work, still remains a mystery to us. As for the price of the nubia X, the vendor claims that it would hover around RMB 10,000 (~Rs 1,05,000).

The features certainly bring high hopes from the offering, and we can’t wait to see how the nubia X smartphone will actually pan out. We’ll bring you all the updates about the device as and when they arrive, so keep watching the space.

Sana Mir becomes first Pakistani to attain No. 1 spot in ICC Women’s ODI Rankings

Sana Mir became the first Pakistani woman to top the chart of the ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings with a career-high 663 points. Mir ended up as the highest wicket-taker even as her team went down 0-3 to Australia in their ICC Women’s Championship series.

The series sweep was a good one for Australia, who extended their lead over New Zealand at the top of the table, while losses outnumbered wins for Pakistan, who are now down at No.6, just above South Africa and Sri Lanka on the table, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in statement on their official website.

But Mir, the 32-year-old former captain, had a good time out in Kuala Lumpur with her off-spin, returning figures of 3/26, 1/37 and 3/53 that lifted her three spots on the table, as she went past Marizanne Kapp of South Africa and Australia’s Megan Schutt as well as the out-of-action Jess Jonassen of Australia, who slipped from No.1 to No.4.

Australia off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner was outstanding in the last ODI, hitting an unbeaten 37-ball 62 and picking up three wickets.

She made the difference in the final game, where Alyssa Healy‘s 97 was the top score for Australia, but Gardner’s was the real match-winning effort.

Gardner moved up to a career-best No.17 (up nine spots) among bowlers as a result, and also to No.50 with a jump of eight spots in the list for batters.

Australia captain Meg Lanning was in great form in the second game, hitting 124. She retained her No.2 spot in the batters’ table, with 675 points, only six behind compatriot Ellyse Perry at the top.

Lanning has moved to within six points of Perry in the batters’ chart.

Nicole Bolton, meanwhile, didn’t have a good series, and dropped out of the top 10 after slipping six spots. Allysa Healy, however, went up two places to joint No.16 with South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt. The tally of 574 points is her best to date.

Among the Pakistan batters, Nahida Khan was solid, scoring 17, 66 and 37, and is now the 25th best in the world with a career-best 497 points.

Chinese golfers pull out of Taiwan event

Chinese Shanshan Feng in action

Chinese players on the elite US professional women’s golf tour have pulled out of this week’s tournament in Taiwan at the eleventh hour after being told by someone “high up” in China to skip the event, informed sources familiar with the situation.

They said world No. 9 Shanshan Feng and rookie Yu Liu were told during last weekend’s event in Shanghai that they should not play in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship, which starts in Taipei on Thursday.

China, which views self-ruled Taiwan as a wayward province, has ramped up pressure to assert its sovereignty. Ties have deteriorated since 2016, when President Tsai Ing-wen of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party came to power in Taiwan.

It is unclear who told Feng and Liu, the only two Chinese golfers confirmed for the event in Taiwan, not to attend, but, barring injury, it is highly unusual for players to withdraw at such a late stage.

“They said I can’t respond regarding the issue of withdrawing from the competition,” Liu said via her official account on the Twitter-like social media platform Weibo, referring to her agents.

Asked why she had pulled out of the tournament, she declined to comment but said it was “not for personal reasons”.

One source at the tournament said officials there had no plans to fine the players for withdrawing so late in the day, “given the circumstances”. — Reuters
